FAQ.

Do I need a copywriter for my website?

Copy and content -- more than anything -- is crucial to making a success of your website. You need to communicate effectively with your visitors when they arrive at your site to get your messages across. That's done through your copy.

You also need to attract the right people to visit in the first place. Again, depending on your market, copy and content plays its part. By incorporating keywords and phrases that target your audience, you can attract traffic through the free search engines.

Here's a quote from www.searchengineguide.com that illustrates why this is important:

"The key (to having good search engine friendly content) is in hiring a professional copywriter... All SEOs these days should be working with professional copywriters, as it's the one true key to high rankings. Don't ever underestimate the value of your copy for your visitor... You've got to sell them on what you offer, and the only way to do that is through your copy."

So, do you need a copywriter? Not necessarily, but it wouldn't hurt to get an assessment done here.

Even if you don't need a full rewrite of your content, you could benefit from some copy editing that will make sure it's search engine friendly and readable.

But people don't read on the Web, do they?

So you've been told people don't read online. They don't want to... it hurts their eyes... right? Wrong. Just look at the explosion of blogs or name a newspaper or magazine that doesn't have an online version. Sure, people do scan, rather than drink in every word, when they read online. But that isn't a barrier to incorporating well-written copy into your website using specific online writing techniques.

The fact is, people are now very comfortable reading online... none more so than today's 15, 16, and 17-year-olds who are all over blogs, MySpace, and other online communities and sites. That's important to know because, in the very near future, they will be your potential customers -- people completely at home communicating and making transactions online. Will you be ready for them?

Can I do it myself?

You certainly can do it yourself. And many smaller businesses take that approach. But it's really a question of how well you can do it yourself. There are some great books around and loads of free copywriting resources on the 'Net. So, if you're willing to spend the money and time on learning, then go for it. It's a matter of deciding how much is your time worth to you, and whether you would be better off spending that time focusing on other areas of your business that you do know about.

There's also the question of how you will know if the copy you write works or not -- and how to fix it if it breaks -- if you weren't really sure what you were doing in the first place. So you may end up calling in a professional after all.

Why not make sure you get it right first time, instead of treating one of the most important elements of your website and other marketing material as an afterthought?
