How to attract traffic to your website

It worked for Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, but the "If you build it they will come" tactic doesn't work nearly as well for websites as it does for ghostly baseball fields.

If you have a website, you have to work at attracting people to it. And it's hard work because, at times, the Internet seems to offer up a vision of a world in which the lunatics have taken over the asylum. There's yelling and oddness and noise and clamour.

And, unfortunately, your target audience have to fight their way through this to find what they're looking for.

So it's in your interest to do everything in your power to provide them with an easy route to your website. It's without doubt one of the most important aspects of doing business online.

But it's also one of the best things about doing business online, especially if your run a small businesses. The Web allows you to expand your reach and sell to people in other cities, countries and continents.

At the very least, there are several easy things you can do to give yourself the best chance of reaching your target audience:

1. Get listed in relevant online directories like DMOZ.org.

2. Publish your URL on all of your businesses communications.

3. Optimise your copy and content for your important keywords.

4. Submit your site to Google, Yahoo and MSN.

5. Consider starting a blog.

6. Submit keyword-optimised press releases to free online PR sites.

7. Submit articles ("signed" by you) to free content websites.

8. Add articles to your site to attract more search engine traffic.

9. Add keywords to key areas of your site, such as page titles.

10. Link to and from sites contain similar content to yours.

11. Use email to follow up with customers and convert prospects.
