Leverage the latest technology to improve your website

It seems like a new Web technology or gizmo is invented almost every day. And some of them can be very useful to an online business.

However, a word of warning. Don't go crazy and implement every tool and widget you read about or come across.

Don't be that "all sizzle and no steak" website.

Remember early websites?

There were flashy images, noises that played when you clicked something, spinning words and pictures, and banner ads galore.

Then there were Flash presentations everywhere. Multimedia and interactivity defined the Web experience... or so it was thought.

But it turned out that all that "noise" got in the way of the essential information and marketing messages on websites.

And now, most effective websites keep it simple.

If you don't believe me, take a look at one of, if not the, most popular websites in the world -- www.google.com

So, even though there are hundred of tools you can use on your web pages and behind the scenes, using them all can clutter up your site and cause you more trouble than it's worth.

So it's helpful to be able to identify the good ones. The ones that can be very valuable to your website and business. Some are free, like these tools:

1. Google Sitemaps helps you get your website indexed more often.

2. Google Analytics helps you track your visitors.

3. Keyword Selector Tool helps you find good keywords.

4. BrowserCam shows your pages in different browsers.

However, these tools are mostly for the website owner.

How about something for your customers that sizzles and has plenty of steak?

How about starting a blog?

Any online business -- especially smaller businesses -- can benefit form a blog in a number of ways:

1. A blog makes your business more approachable and personal.

2. A blog helps build your credibility as an expert.

3. A blog increases your presence on the Web.

4. A blog lets you communicate directly with your target audience.

The only big drawback can be the time factor. But if you can write, or have written for you, five to ten core "sticky" articles/posts, then you can keep your blog going with a short, snappy post every day or so.
